Named in the lawsuit for heading the “Cosby suite” and harassing female employees, Activision Blizzard quietly let him go last year. The decision to rename McCree was expected, as the company had dealt with this before following the removal of creative senior director Alex Afrasiabi. Jesse McCree is one of the few high-level individuals who have been let go from the company as a result of the lawsuit, alongside Diablo 4 game director Luis Barriga and World of Warcraft designer Jonathan LeCraft. “As we continue to discuss how we best live up to our values and to demonstrate our commitment to creating a game that reflects them, we believe it’s necessary to change the name of the hero currently known as McCree to something that better represents what Overwatch stands for,” the tweet reads. The cowboy was named after former Blizzard level designer Jesse McCree, who was let go from the company following the Activision Blizzard lawsuit. But specifically changing the ingame name of a character to prevent even more backlash is Just plain stupid.Blizzard announced they will be changing the name of the Overwatch character McCree in a tweet Thursday morning. Why dont you name him Jimmy Jonathan for god sake, if we are gonna go for names that dont fit cowboys.Īlright to recap: sexual assault bad, very bad, fuck that guy. Now the Lore is gonna be out of sync and people are gonna wonder: hm why isnt this Guy named mccree but Cassidy? And then the whole story had to be explained again and again.įucking hell blizzard you don't have to throw a wrench in the ALREADY existing mechanics that have been built up over many years. I personally think its fucking stupid that they put effort into changing the name. I am 100% in favor of whatever Comes to the assaulter, fucking jail him for life even, but that doesn't mean that the entire overwatch community should have to deal with the backlash of a namechange. Seperate the game from the people damnit. Look if they didn't change the name I think legit millions of people wouldnt even have KNOWN that mccree was named after someone. Does a guy who dresses like a cowboy unironically make sense to be called first name COLE? Why not call him Cassidy McCree again 2 cowboy names and its not named after the employee. I am still calling him McCree since I have been calling him that for like 6 years now and I refuse to call him Cole. Also why is there a wanted poster that says Cole Cassidy? It makes no sense just leave that as McCree as a way to show he moved on. I like the My name is spray I think that looks good but did you have to call some sprays Cole or Young Cole. Its so weird that he was in the M near Mei and Lucio and is now with Brig and D.Va. As you might recall, Blizzard announced it would be changing the name McCree - the popular cowboy gunslinger in its team-based first-person shooter, Overwatch. Like people will still be able to call him McCree and he is no longer named after the guy. I think that justification is reasonable.īut couldn't you just call him James McCree. Ok I am ok with his name being changed I understand that Blizzard doesn't want to reward a person who did horrible things to other employees.
